Sonardyne’s Ranger 2 USBL for MBARI’s state-of-the-art research ship

25.10.2022
US oceanographic research centre Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) has chosen deepwater positioning technology from Sonardyne for its new, state-of-the-art scientific flagship the R/V David Packard. The 50 m-long research vessel, named in honour of MBARI’s founder, David Packard, is being built to undertake a diverse range of missions in Monterey Bay and beyond, supporting the institute’s mission to advance marine science and technology to understand a changing ocean.

Scientists Discover New Hydrothermal Vents and Possible New Species in the Gulf of California

22.11.2021
A multidisciplinary team of scientists from Mexico and the U.S. discovered new hydrothermal vents and six possible new animal species during a 33-day expedition off the coast of La Paz on Schmidt Ocean Institute's research vessel Falkor. The underwater robot ROV SuBastian was used to explore and sample vents emitting fluids at temperatures up to 287°C (549°F) along with the unique animal communities inhabiting this extreme environment. ROV SuBastian additionally captured stunning imagery of the seafloor including hydrothermal mirror pools, calcite spires, and iridescent blue scale worms.

Saildrone Launches the World’s Largest and most Advanced Autonomous Surface Vehicle for Ocean Exploration.

15.01.2021
Saildrone, Inc. has launched a 72 foot (22 m) version of its uncrewed surface vehicles, known as saildrones. Powered by wind and solar energy, saildrones are capable of extreme-duration missions of up to 12 months in the open ocean.

New $53 Million Grant to Create a World-Wide Fleet of Robotic Floats to Monitor Ocean Health

29.10.2020
On October 29, 2020 the National Science Foundation (NSF) approved a $53 million grant to a consortium of the country’s top ocean-research institutions to build a global network of chemical and biological sensors that will monitor ocean health. Scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), University of Washington, Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Princeton University will use this grant to build and deploy 500 robotic ocean-monitoring floats around the globe.

Smart boulders measure fast and powerful seafloor avalanches

08.10.2018
Robotic sensors disguised as boulders, or ‘smart boulders’, have been used to measure the initiation and evolution of huge seafloor avalanches for the first time, revealing some surprising findings that will help inform where best to lay the seafloor cables that keep the internet running.

Sonardyne Ranger 2 USBL delivers spectacular positioning for MBARI expedition

04.10.2015
ROV tracking technology supplied by Sonardyne Inc. in Houston to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) provided spectacular performance during an expedition to study recently discovered deep sea hydrothermal vents in the Gulf of California.
