SMD Awarded Contract To Further Upgrade The DeepOcean T3200

11.05.2016
Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd (SMD) are pleased to announce they have been awarded a contract by DeepOcean UK to deliver a mechanical cutting boom and associated cable handling system for the T3200 Tractor. SMD originally delivered the T3200 back in 2008 as the world’s most powerful trenching asset and were subsequently awarded a contract in 2013 to add an interchangeable jet trenching cassette which delivered unrivalled jetting power in softer ground.

This exciting new contract will see its capabilities further enhanced to meet the increasing demands of the market with the addition of a third mechanical cutting cassette offering a ultra-high torque, boom cutting tool for simultaneous mechanical and jet trenching, thus enabling the protection of bundled and un-bundled power cables in rock and other hard ground areas which cannot be trenched with less capable machines.

T3200 will also become the launch platform for SMD’s Health Usage and Monitoring System (HUMS). This will collect, log and analyse the health and performance of the machine and can be used for real time stress analysis of the asset and its work rate. HUMS is an important technology which will help customers build and sustain a lifetime of trouble free ownership and can be retro fitted to existing assets. It is the first product developed by the new Innovation Team at SMD.

Pierre Boyde, DeepOcean’s Commercial Director commented: “SMD is a local and long-term partner of DeepOcean and together we have developed a high-value supply chain in the UK. We are pleased to call on SMD’s extensive engineering experience to maximise the T3200’s capability in preparation for committed offshore renewable and interconnector projects in the UK and Europe”

As MD of SMD’s Trenching business, Paul Davison has been working with DeepOcean for over 20 years “It’s great to be able not only to deliver an asset, but to work with the customer to improve the capability of that asset, ultimately helping them to provide their customers with low risk solutions, whatever the challenge may be. It is SMD’s extensive subsea engineering experience that allows us to work so closely with customers to maximise their value by repurposing their assets as markets change and develop."
